 🥋 Taekwondo Belt Promotion Test (WT & IT Standard)

🔹 Introduction

Belt promotion tests in Taekwondo measure a student’s progress in technique, discipline, physical ability, and knowledge.
As per World Taekwondo (WT) and India Taekwondo (IT) standards, students must demonstrate skills in:

  • Blocks (Makki)

  • Stances (Seogi)

  • Fist Strikes & Hand Techniques (Jireugi, Chigi, Chireugi)

  • Thrusts (Tzireugi)

  • Kicks (Chagi)

  • Breaking (Kyukpa) – for higher belts

  • Poomsae (Forms) – according to belt level

  • Sparring (Kyorugi) – for intermediate and advanced belts

  • Theory & Etiquette – knowledge of Taekwondo terms, discipline, and respect


🔹 Promotion Test Requirements by Belt

White Belt (10th Geup) → Yellow Stripe (9th Geup)

  • Basic stances (Attention stance, Ready stance, Walking stance)

  • Basic blocks (Low block, Middle block)

  • Basic punches (Middle punch)

  • Front kick practice

  • No poomsae (only Kibon basic drills)

Yellow Stripe (9th Geup) → Yellow Belt (8th Geup)

  • Improved stances (Front stance, Horse-riding stance)

  • Blocks (Low block, Middle block, High block)

  • Strikes (Hammer fist strike, Knife-hand block)

  • Kicks (Front kick, Side kick basics)

  • Poomsae: Taegeuk Il Jang (1st Form)

Yellow Belt (8th Geup) → Green Stripe (7th Geup)

  • Blocks: Inside block, Knife-hand middle block

  • Strikes: Back fist strike

  • Kicks: Front kick, Side kick, Roundhouse kick (basic)

  • Poomsae: Taegeuk Il Jang (1st Form)

Green Stripe (7th Geup) → Green Belt (6th Geup)

  • Blocks: Double arm block, Low knife-hand block

  • Strikes: Elbow strike, Palm strike

  • Kicks: Roundhouse kick, Side kick (improved)

  • Poomsae: Taegeuk Ee Jang (2nd Form)

Green Belt (6th Geup) → Blue Stripe (5th Geup)

  • Blocks: Mountain block, Double knife-hand block

  • Strikes: Ridge-hand strike

  • Kicks: Back kick, Hook kick (intro)

  • Breaking: Simple board break (front kick or side kick)

  • Poomsae: Taegeuk Sam Jang (3rd Form)

Blue Stripe (5th Geup) → Blue Belt (4th Geup)

  • Advanced stances (Back stance, Cat stance)

  • Blocks: Palm block, Scissor block

  • Kicks: Crescent kick, Spinning back kick (basic)

  • Sparring introduction

  • Poomsae: Taegeuk Sa Jang (4th Form)

Blue Belt (4th Geup) → Red Stripe (3rd Geup)

  • Hand techniques: Knife-hand strike, Spear-hand thrust

  • Kicks: Jumping front kick, Jumping side kick

  • Sparring (basic 1-step or light contact)

  • Breaking: Hand or foot technique

  • Poomsae: Taegeuk Oh Jang (5th Form)

Red Stripe (3rd Geup) → Red Belt (2nd Geup)

  • Advanced hand techniques (Elbow thrust, Back-fist strike variations)

  • Kicks: Spinning hook kick, Jump roundhouse kick

  • Sparring with control

  • Breaking (stronger technique)

  • Poomsae: Taegeuk Yuk Jang (6th Form)

Red Belt (2nd Geup) → Black Stripe (1st Geup)

  • Stronger application of blocks, strikes, and thrusts

  • Advanced kicks (Axe kick, Tornado kick)

  • Free sparring (controlled)

  • Multiple board breaking (kick + strike)

  • Poomsae: Taegeuk Chil Jang (7th Form)

Black Stripe (1st Geup) → Black Belt (1st Dan/Poom)

  • Demonstration of all basic and advanced techniques

  • High-level sparring (various opponents)

  • Breaking with multiple techniques

  • Knowledge of Taekwondo philosophy and Korean terms

  • Poomsae: Taegeuk Pal Jang (8th Form) and Koryo


🔹 Black Belt Promotion (Dan / Poom)

  • 1st Dan / 1st Poom → Koryo (Korean spirit)

  • 2nd Dan / 2nd Poom → Keumgang (Strength, Mountain)

  • 3rd Dan → Taebaek (Sacred Mountain)

  • 4th Dan → Pyongwon (Vast plain)

  • 5th Dan → Sipjin (Ten symbols, eternity)

  • 6th Dan → Jitae (Earth)

  • 7th Dan → Chonkwon (Heavenly power)

  • 8th Dan → Hansu (Water)

  • 9th Dan → Ilyeo (Unity, oneness)
